History
Sometimes a setback is actually an opportunity.
When this project began, the mandate was to improve the aging and non-functional connection from the carriage house to the barn with a new connecting addition, but demolition on the site revealed termite damage in the barn and poor insulation and foundation issues in the carriage house. This unfortunate turn became an opportunity to connect two disparate structures in a more sensible way. The revised program renovated the carriage house to improve its insulation and HVAC systems and removed the barn.
A new addition was placed perpendicular to the carriage house. Though it evokes the same style as the former barn structure, the new volume attached to the existing home allows for a contemporary, bright interior enclosed within historic forms common to the local area.
