Laura Thomas is the founder and President of Melville Thomas Architects.
I have 40 years experience in corporate and residential architecture mostly as the owner of Melville Thomas Architects, a business I founded in 1987 after spending my formative years with firms both in Boston and Baltimore.
Over the years, I have focused on residential design while growing the firm’s corporate work through collaboration and strategic hiring. I am a registered professional architect in six states, a member of the AIA, and a LEED AP. Both my work and my commentary on the profession of architecture can be seen in various professional and feature publications and several books. Just as important as my professional designations, I am a mother of two grown sons and two daughter-in-laws, a distinction that gives my projects a unique perspective on how a home should function in order to be flexible through the various phases of family life.
I enjoy acting as a role model for women in architecture and to those aspiring to the profession. In the past, I have taught drawing classes at the Maryland Institute College of Art, been an activist for family causes at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Children’s Center and a member of the architectural review board for the Roland Park Foundation. I am an Italian language student, a tennis player, aspiring pianist, fitness swimmer and novice triathlete as well as a passionate architect and business owner. I travel regularly and try to visit Italy at least once a year where I sketch and paint, speak Italian and observe the culture. My watercolors are available directly through my studio or for purchase here.
